7th  Annual  Carolina Boat Builders Tournament

The 56-foot Paul Mann "Qualifier" was the first place winner in the the 7th annual Carolina Boat Builder's Tournament held Thursday July 15th - Sunday July 18th at Pirate's Cove Marina.

The Qualifier crew landed 16 sailfish for a total of 1,600 points and a crew member also won the Top Angler award with 1,000 points.

Second place went to the 54-foot Omie Tillett Rigged Up, with 14 sailfish and a total of 1,400 points. Rigged Up also won the Daily Winner on day-three with 800 points.Qualifier, the 2010 Dare County Boat Builders big fish tournament winner

The Day 1 winner was the 66-foot Spencer Yacht Secotan with 800 points and Day 2 winner was the Sniper built by Paul Mann with 100 points.

The 56-foot Irving Forbes Smoker took third place with 11 sailfish and 1,100 points caught on Day Three.

Reel Jim, built by Caison, took fourth place with 11 sailfish on Day Three and a total of 1,100 points and fifth place went to Obsession built by Sheldon Midgett with 10 sailfish and a total of 1,000 points.

In the Game Fish category, the winners are:

  • First place dolphin (35 lbs) - Sea Hag built by Craig Blackwell
  • Second place dolphin (26.5 lbs) - Reel Affair, a 55-foot Ricky Scarborough
  • First place wahoo (22 lbs) and second place wahoo (17 lbs) - Figment, a 56-foot Bayliss
  • First place tuna (40.5 lbs) - 56-foot Paul Mann boat Pelican
  • Second place tuna (6 lbs) - Ambush, a 61-foot Briglia.

Shelby Zimmer won the Top Lady Angler award with 800 points on the Smoker, and the Top Junior Angler award went to Holton Clifton on the True Grit with 300 points.

Paul Mann of Paul Mann Custom Boats won the Manufacturer's Perpetual Trophy for Qualifier's 1,600-point victory.

The tournament attracted 19 boats, which caught 114 sailfish - 53 sailfish were caught on the first day, one on day two and 60 on the last day.

The Dare County Boat Builders Tournament is a release-only event, open to any custom sportfish boat built in North and South Carolina. In addition to the basic entry, two Calcutta categories and a game fish category are also offered.

The event, supported by sponsors, local businesses and partners within the marine industry, raised $75,000, which will fund future student scholarships in Dare County. Last year's tournament raised $35,000 and funded 12 scholarships for Dare County graduating seniors and college students.

In addition, all food provided at each night's reception was donated by local restaurants: Kelly's, JK's, Jonny Marlins, Sam & Omie's, Basnights Lone Cedar, Awful Arthurs, 1587, The Dunes, Ortega'z Southwestern Grill, Owen's and Sugar Creek.
